Every October, I find myself yearning for a playful twist on the usual Halloween treats. This year, I decided to combine two childhood favorites—pizza and holiday fun—into one chaotic, cheesy masterpiece. The scent of bubbling cheese and crispy crust fills the house, making it hard to wait before devouring.

The charm of a Mummy Pizza lies in its messy, approachable nature. It’s proof that you can turn simple ingredients into a memorable visual spectacle, perfect for a festive crowd or a mischievous family dinner. Plus, it’s almost too cute to eat—almost.

Mummy Pizza

Mummy Pizza consists of a pizza crust topped with melted cheese and decorated with strips of sliced cheese or dough to resemble a mummy wrapping. The dish is baked until golden and bubbly, with a crispy crust and gooey cheese, finished with olive or pepperoni eyes for a spooky effect.

Ingredients

  • 1 package pizza dough store-bought or homemade
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 slices cheese slices for mummy wrappings
  • 4 black olives for eyes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface into a thin circle about 12 inches in diameter. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Spread a generous layer of shredded mozzarella evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.
  4. Bake the crust in the oven until it turns golden around the edges, about 10-12 minutes.
  5. Once baked, remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool slightly so the cheese firms up a bit for easier decoration.
  6. Use slices of cheese to create bandages over the pizza, starting from one side and overlapping slightly to resemble a mummy wrapping. Carefully arrange the strips to cover most of the cheese and crust.
  7. Place small rounds of black olives on the top for eyes, pressing them into the cheese strips for a secure hold. Add a tiny piece of olive or pepperoni for pupils if desired.
  8. Brush the cheese strips lightly with olive oil to help them melt slightly and add a shiny finish once baked.
  9. Return the decorated pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the cheese wraps are slightly crispy and the eyes are set.
  10. Remove the Mummy Pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice into pieces and serve while hot, with the cheesy wrapping and eyes creating a playful, spooky look.

Notes

Feel free to add extra toppings like pepperoni or vegetables before baking for added flavor.

When the last strip of melted cheese is gone, what remains is a story of laughter and a kitchen filled with the smell of nostalgia. This recipe isn’t just about feeding bodies, it’s about creating a moment of shared chaos and joy during spooky season. For me, that’s what makes it a must-do each fall.

So, embrace the mess, get creative with your “mummy” bandages—err, strips of toppings—and enjoy the spooky season with everyone gathered around this playful dish. It’s the imperfect, messy, cheesy fun that captures the spirit of Halloween perfectly.
