  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs panko or crushed crackers
  • 1/4 cup onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 tablespoon oil for frying

Method
 

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly, then mash them with a fork or potato masher until they’re chunky but hold together well.
  2. Combine the mashed beans in a large bowl with finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, and a splash of lime juice. Mix until evenly distributed.
  3. Add the beaten egg and bread crumbs to the bowl, stirring until the mixture is cohesive and slightly sticky.
  4. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about 1/2 inch thick. Place the patties on a plate and chill in the fridge for at least 15 minutes to help them firm up.
  5. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering and slightly fragrant. Carefully place the chilled patties into the hot pan.
  6. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they develop a golden-brown crust and feel firm to the touch.
  7. Remove the patties from the pan and let them rest for a minute. Serve on toasted buns with your favorite toppings like avocado, salsa, or sour cream.

Notes

Chilling the patties before frying helps them hold their shape. Feel free to customize with additional spices or toppings for extra flavor.
