Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings preferably split into flats and drumettes
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce for glaze
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional, for extra shine
  • 1 tablespoon oil for baking
  • 1 teaspoon salt for seasoning

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Wire rack
  • Small pot
  • Mixing bowls
  • Kitchen brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top to elevate the wings for even crisping.
  2. Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture, which helps them get crispy.
  3. Toss the wings with oil and salt in a large mixing bowl until evenly coated. This step ensures crispy skin with flavor.
  4. Arrange the wings on the wire rack in a single layer, making sure they are not overcrowded.
  5. Bake the wings in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, turning them halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  6. While the wings bake, combine soy sauce, minced garlic, and honey in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the mixture simmers and slightly thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Remove the sauce from heat and brush it generously over the hot wings using a kitchen brush, ensuring they are coated with a glossy, dark glaze.
  8. If desired, drizzle additional honey over the wings for extra shine and sweetness.
  9. Once glazed, return the wings to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to set the glaze and enhance the shine.
  10. Remove the wings from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes. They will be crispy on the outside with a dark, shiny glaze, resembling tiny bats ready to take flight.

Notes

For shaping the wings like bats, use small kitchen scissors or a knife to cut out tiny wing shapes from the wing tips before baking, if desired.
