Ingredients

  • 1 package store-bought pizza dough or homemade if preferred
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce good quality or blended canned tomatoes with garlic
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese fresh for more flavor
  • 1/4 cup black olives sliced for eyes
  • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices spicy and smoky, for facial features
  • to taste fresh basil or oregano for finishing
  • a pinch chili flakes chili flakes for a spicy kick

Equipment

  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet or pizza stone
  • Pizza cutter or sharp knife
  • Cooking brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F) and place your baking sheet or pizza stone inside to heat up.
  2. Unroll the pizza dough onto a floured surface and gently roll it out to about 30cm (12 inches) in diameter, trying to keep it even to ensure a uniform crust.
  3. Transfer the rolled-out dough onto a piece of parchment paper or a floured pizza peel, then slide it onto the hot baking sheet or pizza stone.
  4. Spread a thin, even layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving about 2cm (1 inch) around the edges for the crust.
  5. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the sauce, focusing more around the edges and where you'll place the facial features.
  6. Arrange sliced black olives on the pizza to mimic eyes, positioning them symmetrically or creatively as spooky eyes.
  7. Place pepperoni slices to form a mouth and nose, creating a spooky face that pops against the cheese.
  8. Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until the crust is golden and crispy and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  9. Remove the pizza from the oven carefully, and let it cool for a couple of minutes. Then, sprinkle chopped fresh basil or oregano over the top for added flavor and color.
  10. Finish with a light sprinkle of chili flakes if you like a spicy kick, and slice the pizza with a sharp cutter or pizza wheel.
  11. Serve the spooky Halloween pizza warm, and enjoy the playful, chaotic feast with friends or family!
